are any of you fisherman out there using the new hummingbird 597 down imiging sonar with gps and if so is it worth geting one please give some feedbacks thanks gary
I have been using the Humminbird 597 ci HD DI unit, got about 200 hours on it, and you will never go back to standard sonar after you have been around the down imaging versions, yes they are expensive, 600+, but worth every penny!
These new rules about emptying all your water before you leave the lake are forgetting one thing, the geese don't follow the rules.
Geese and other fowl carry eggs on there feet, why couldn't they carry a mussel that holds on? I know they'll say that I don't have a degree like they do, but not letting people take their fish home in water is the craziest idea ever. Are they trying to make us all quit fishing and set up camps for illegals at our public lakes or what? The American Sportsman
I am interested in knowing how you guys are feeling about the bait law that has been implimented this year? I know us that love to fish for big cats in Region 5 are ticked off at this stupid rule. If you want to get the scoop on it read Region 5 Dock Squawk. We need to raise our voices on this.
The new laws are just CRAZY! I talked with an Kansas Wildlife Officer about the new laws.He just laughed when I asked him if he could explain them to me. What he told me was that because they had no input regarding the new laws they were not going to sit around making sure everyone follows them.Tooo mane new laws and not enough people to enforce them.We shall see.
I'm from region 5 along with Hunt n Fish, I'm sure glad you guys are starting to get some chatter going over the new bait laws, and how you have to transport you catch from some bodies of water. These laws are total B.S.! Let's get loud and voice our opions sportsman. Thanks.
These new bait laws are going to force alot of law abiding guys to be outlaws. I have always followed the rules and I understand they are trying to protect our waters. They have to understand that I am addicted to chasing and catching big catfish. I have alot of money invested in this hobby, it is something that I enjoy doing, and have no desire to quit. I can't fish without bait. The bait shops are not always open when I get ready to go fishing. If they are open, they very seldom have the size of bait that I am in need of. If they are open, happen to have what I am looking for, I might not have the rather large chunk of change it would take to purchase the quantity of bait that is needed to put my mind at ease. Gas prices going the way they are, is going to be enough of an expense.
I take my wife out during the day to catch bait, she doesn't mind me heading out at night to use it. Besides its the whole self sufficient feeling you get from catching your bait, to catch them monster cats that is part of my addiction. When someone does catch that record fish at the river, we can't leave with it alive from the river? After I go contact a game warden, the fish is weighed and photographed, it is going back in the river, just like 99% of the fish I catch. Now it is unlawful to leave the river with it alive.
I hate to be put in a situation where the only way I can fish is by breaking the law. I do my best to obey the laws. I am a catfishin' addict and if catchin' bait is outlawed, only outlaws will have good bait.
George, I totally agree. I have a 9 and 6 yr old daughters. Them and their momma go catch bait with me most of the time. There's enough action to keep them entertained, they're learning about different things in nature as well as different fish species. So much for passing it on KDWPT. They don't understand that most of us spend more time catching and caring for our bait then we do actually fishing. Good wild bait makes all the diffence, and now only outlaws will have good bait. If you can find a bait shop with the size of bait I use, I probably won't be able to afford it. I imagine our waterways will be left to the outlaws. If they hear a boat, they'll know it's a good chance its the KDWPT, so they can dispose of any evidence. I've hung flyers up at the local baitshops with the upcoming meeting date, phone numbers and email addresses of the commissioners and regional offices. I urge everyone to do the same, make contact with them and maybe we can shake them up. I'm still checking into how to correctlly go about a petition. Thanks sportsman!
More regulation is not the answer. Education is the answer and if the KDWPT wants to regulate then use common sense solutions. It is already illegal to transport ANS. So instead of making all wild bait illegal then maybe give a list of "legal" wild bait such as bluegill or redear perch etc. If you can't tell the difference between the white perch and a bluegill perch then maybe you shouldn't be using them for bait at all. Taking more of our freedoms away is not the answer. We all are concerned about the ANS but these big bodies of water that have them still have to release water out of their spillways and the ANS will still spread. If I want to catch a bluegill out of my farm pond and use it for catfish bait then I should be able to.
Chuck- I read where prohibited species cannot be used for bait in Kansas. But white perch are allowed at Cheney for cut bait. My question is can asian carp be used as bait with your permission in the Kansas River and tributaries- specifically east of Bowersock dam to the Missouri river. Can they be used whole with tails cut off and slashed through the stomach area and thrown out for catfish bait?
Catman, If you do come up with a petition I would be more than happy to sign it.These new laws just make no sence. I have to kill my fish I catch at the Blue river before I take them home to clean? Write me a ticket then because I'm not going to kill my fish at the river!!I fish for mostly Saugeye and Wipers, How does me killing them help anything? If I go buy minnows now I have to keep my receipt? What? I keep my minnows from the day before so I guess I'm going to get wrote up a lot because I will have more minnows in my bucket than I'm allowed.I'm not sure what pencil pusher came up with some of this stuff but we need to fight these laws.
Glad to see we have so much support among us. These are very good points listed above. Wonder why KDWPT hasn't chimed in. Didn't think there'd be this big of a backlash over the subject??? I've emailed the commissioners and Sec. the last 3 days, still no reponse.
I think it would be a great idea for the KDWPT to poll the sportsman on their opinions on changes in the law but it would be a WISE idea. Maybe they would find that there are many common sense solutions to these issues and the thoughts of many minds can be better than the thoughts of the few. You KDWPT guys should get on here and explain yourselves. What do we have to do go to the media to get you to answer?
You can contact them on the blog. Voice your opinion, copy the email address all together. Hit M at the top of the page and paste it. If everyone did that everytime the they blogged. There would be about EIGHTY sitting in there inbox.
If anyone needs the email addresses for any of the commissioners OR the Sec. of KDWPT, let me know I have all. Contact the regional offices also, just ask for who's in charge.
I have found that KDWPT does not care what a hand full of fishermen think. The only way to get anywhere is to bring it to public attention and have hundreds sign a petition.Trust me I have delt with KDWTP in the past and they were not that much help until the subject was made public and county commissioners took the state on head to head and even then it took over a year to get the issue resolved..
Darren B on your humminbird 597 did u mount the transducer on the transom and if so did u stay the 15 in distance from the prop as they recimend im running into problems thanks Gary

To any fisherman that cares about the actual fishery at hillsdale lake.....#1. I need lots of people to call into the Core of engineers and KDWP and get the water release to stop at hillsdale lake...Months and Months of low water then we finally get the rain and what happens...they let the water out..and of all times RIGHT DURING PEAK FISH SPAWN FOR ALL FISH IN THE LAKE..what???????????????????????? How do this happen...??????????????
2#...why in the world does it take weeks to gather walleye from the lake...are we stocking china, japan, argentina with our walleyes???????? my guess is YES...
Hello evryone, I've started an outdoor group on facebook for discussion of summertime activities, from catfish to scuba we have it all, come check us out and get in on some conversations at wolfmans outdoor channel
Hillsdale, are they catching lot's of walleyes in the outlet? I don't know anyone who is, so what's the fuss. They hold release rates back in preservation of the walleye anyway
Walleye spawn is all but over now....whites on the dam...shad..carp...and yet still the nets are out..a few small males can be caught but good luck!!!!
chuck or leavenworth co. lake mgr. the lake could use a stocking of smallmouth bass. I tried various tactics for them but ended up with largemouth and decent sized sunfish instead. I think the largemouth fingerling population is a little high also.
This new law which will require seniors to buy hunt/fish license to help raise revenue for the State could be easily overcome by raising the general hunt/fish license by $1.00 and also fixing the lying/cheating hunt own land folks buying bogus hunt tags which the Dept does not want to enforce!!! Too hard to do they say!!!!
Baby boomers are a great deal of the U.S. population. They had the better opportunities than what we have now. Jobs and living were easier to come by and housing was way affordable. The over 65 free Kansas licenses are/should be for Kansas families who have been in this state for 120 years or better. Anyone else is obviously from elsewhere. We don't care where you are from, just keep paying full price for the priviledge to use Kansas fish/hunt resourses that we started back a long time ago. Am I right or am I wrong. Deep down this is the real reason(s) this is being brought up in Topeka.
Why is it necessary for bloggers to post ignorant comments like this. Is your 120 years just a figure you put out there or is that how long your family has resided in kansas.I would think that 99% of folks over 65 years old have resided in kansas for quite some time and did not just move here to pummel our fish and game for free. I am all for nonresidents paying their fair share when visiting our state to fish or hunt. However,if I have lived in kansas for say 45 years since age 20 and am now 65 and have bought a combo fish/hunt license along with all accompanying stamps,tags,etc... and given the fact that by age 65 most folks either don't or can't spend as many days afield or on the water; I for one would think we as kansas sportsman could cut our retirees some slack. They have contributed their fair share throughout the years.120 years give me a break!!!! And if it comes to that and that's how long your family has resided here I hope they make the cutoff 130 years(see how ignorant this makes both of us sound).
Yes it would be a drag having to still pay for a fishing license after thinking for a lot of years that I would get one for free after turning retirement age. There are quite a few fishermen who are retired/over 65 who fish everyday here in Kansas. The state knows they can make more money off of them. Maybe where you live there aren't many but where I'm at they are common and probably put a healthy dent in most fish populations. If I had to vote about it I would vote no about paying after 65. By the way we've been here 140 years or better. Have a good day.
here's what I heard thru the grape vine 150 years ago.KDWP gets funding from the US/federal fish and wildlife service for each license kansas sells (not the dollar amount). So with the baby boomer's turning 65 and not buying a license not only is the state out the revenue the state will also be out federal funding. has anyone else heard of this?
Yes anonymous, as I understand it the State continues to get Fed funds for each license sold. I am glad to pay a token buck, or whatever, to retain those funds coming from the federal Pittman/Roberts Act?) if that is how it realy works. I believe the KDWP has publicized that and made it fairly clear.
Are you going to be the one who goes around and tells the folks who are 75-80 years old and/or older that they now have to start buying a license to fish with friends, family? I think the money hungry, misled department needs to rethink things that have been changed this past year. The KDWPT is now known as a "Mickey Mouse" ran outfit wit Mr. Jennison being "Mickey"!!!
When will the channel catfish limit be raised to 5 fish per day instead of 2 fish at Leavenworth Co. lake. Going for 2 fish isn't worth the trip or time.
Hearing at the Oct. commission meeting they are going to vote on possible " cleanup" regulations to the bait law changes. Call or email the state, your commissioner, and your local staff and let them know what you think.
Just a heads up to any Parks officers, and a reminder to everyone.... Catching bait in the outlet of Milford to use above the damn in the lake is against the law. It may seem like a pain, but I would rather not have to deal with invasive species in the lake. It is bad enough there are already zebra mussels in the lake cutting my line. I have seen plenty fishermen getting there lake fishing bait out of the outlet, but not once have I seen L.E. down there. Can we please do something about this?
Was just out to Atchison State Lake, fishing off a pier. Caught some real nice bass there. Couple of 3 pounders and then also a really nice 4.6 lb largemouth. Biggest fish I have caught out there by far. Looks like it might be picking up out there a little bit.
Does anyone know who the biologist for NEBO SFL is? WOndering if there are any camping (primitive) restrictions and what the water level is. Fishing report says normal pool but I don't trust that with teh drought we have been having.
Milford crappie....points near curtis creek and west shore of curtis creek in about 14-20fow. black and char working well. Watch you fish finder for brush piles. ledges near school creek cove. Water is low righ tnow. fishig good
Ok....I have a copy of the COE rules and regs that say I can from my boat fish around docks. How is that docks on COE lakes can be restricted from fishing? There are lots of brush pile around these and the attract the the crappie. Not dock shooting just jigging around....???????Not right

thank you Darren B for the info on the 597 fish finder now i just need to talk myself into buying one
has anybody been doing any good on Crappie at Perry? I haven't seemed to have much luck there this year ;only at our small pond

When will the channel catfish limit be raised to 5 fish per day instead of 2 fish at Leavenworth Co. lake. Going for 2 fish isn't worth the trip or time.
