Went to Clinton lake, Deer Creek Area, on Feb. 2. Ice is very thin, only 3/4 in. There are open spots on lake covered with geese. No Ice Fishing That Day!
Going to Perry this week anyone have anything on what the crappie are doing? might have to hold up for this rain and snow to pass before I hit it.
Went to Perry Rock Creek Marina and fished from the dock on Feb. 12. Caught a few and got a few keepers. Fish were really skinny. Lots of shad floating on surface.
Clinton on the 14th was slow with 6 keepers a few shorts in the channel.Did catch 3 wipers to add some fun to it.Water temp 38 and good visibility.Perry on sunday wasnt any better with 7 keepers and several shorts.Water temp was 39 and stained.
Leaving for Clinton right now
We are going to catch us some Wackers!
Anybody got any info on early fishing at Milford lake??????/
Have the walleye started to spawn at Milford yet?? Looking to try some fishing late next week and looking for some reports.
Picked up a FEW walleyes out of the spillway at Milford, but nothing on the lake yet-they still haven't come up shallow to spawn that I've come across.
Thanks for the info, if possible could you update middle of next week to help out??? We are coming to work on our campsite and going to bring boat, have never tried early fishing at MIlford. Thanks
Amy and Kari are headin' to Perry with the Crappie Hunter today. Full report later...
I have been fishing Hillsdale dam riprap for the past week with the exception of the 3-17-09 from sundown until about 10-11pm and it has been slow on the walleye. The few that I did see caught were taken with cranks and ratltraps and I heard one fisherman mention he took one on the firetiger color. Basically, a female will show up about once an hour and that is when the fish are being caught. Hope this helps you and let me know how you are doing out at Hillsdale.
Went to Tuttle Creek Reservoir on 21 MAR 08. Caught 4 largemouth, largest around 17inches, smallest around 14 inches. Pertinent information:
Time on water: 700AM to 1400PM
Water Temperature: varied more then I thought cove to cove with coldest being 42 and warmest being around 51.
Water Clarity: Clear for tuttle! Muddier as you head North.
Suggested Areas: Stockdale Area and cove north of the Marina.
Suggested Lure: Spinnerbaits
Suggested Areas: Shore where they are sunning and trying to get warm but with access to laydowns and trees.
Overall, still a little cold but they can be caught...
Anyone know if the walleye are running in Hillsdale? Also is there a good White Bass run there on the rocks?
Huntnfish,
I’ve been out there five nights over the last couple weeks. I haven’t had a single strike and have only witnessed a few fish being caught. Just my opinion but it seams the spring run is getting thinner and thinner every year. Between the increased pressure by fishermen, all the netting they do for spawning purposes (that go to other lakes) and the increase in pleasure craft I’m afraid the walleye are suffering. No doubt there are fish there but not like they were years ago… again my opinion. I’ll be out there tonight though. Maybe my mind will be changed.
anybody know anything about wyandotte co. lake? wondering if its worth going out there? Never been... input needed. thanks
If you don't live in Wyandotte County, it will cost you $80 to fish. $30 for WYCO fishing permit, $50 for WYCO boating permit. Looks pretty clear they don't want "outsiders" on "their" lake.
Anybody hit the wakarusa yet for white bass?
Atchison SFL: Crappie were biting heavy before this colder weather come in. 3-4 ft deep and full of eggs. Pulling out 10-20 fish a day @ 8-11 inches long. Good with jigs under a float, much better with minnows. Farm pond were heating up too. Caught 7 bluegill; none smaller than 9 inches and 2 crappie over 12 inches.
Anybody catching any walleye at Milford? Have they spawned yet or where good place to try and fish for them this week????
What and Where is the Wakarusa? I am down by Iola and never heard of it. They have a good White Bass run?
The Wakarusa River runs into Clinton and it usually does well with white bass. It can be tricky to get to the water if it's muddy.
Is the ripples at Valley Falls the best place to catch white bass? I was up there today and the water was up a little and very dirty. Does it ever clear up or does it stay dirty?
Has anyone fished Lake Warnock yet? Have been wanting to go back but since they drained it last year I didn't know if there were any catchable population of fish in it yet.
Went to milford today, 6 hours not one bite! Did not see any fish taken either. I was fishing for cats, walleye, crappie, bass, even goldeneye. Fished spillway, coves on lake, and on dam. Warden says walleye biting on dam face in evening.
Past 2 days at Atchison SFL have proven that there are very nice crappie in the lake. Limited out Saturday with nothing under 10 inches(biggest was 12 1/2 in.) and full of eggs. Limited out this morning. Despite the cold, the fish were biting every cast.
Can anyone tell me how the walleye netting at MIlford went this year??? Not sure if any of the KDWP reads this and can provide any input on this.
lake shawnee trout ishing not so good. fished 3 spots for trout, not one bite. used powerbait, spinners and worms.
White bass should start spawning runs across the state here shortly. Really looking forward to that. Has anyone had any luck at Milford/Tuttle?
As far as the wakarusa goes it probably won't get good for a few weeks. You have to have three things for spawn to get into full swing: Lake temp at 50F; sunny skies; and good water. My guess is that since the winter was so dry waterways are down. After a few good rains you should see them start running. My cousin and I love fishing whites down there.
Atchison SFL: Crappie have spawned. Caught 16 this morning and biting slower than ever. All the fish had no eggs left in them.
I can tell Mr. Anonymous right above me here that the crappie have not spawned anywhere in the state of Kansas yet. The water has to be around 70 degrees for crappie to even think of spawning. I have fished several lakes in northeast kansas over the past 3 months and the only exceptions to the warm water are the power plant lakes that are warm all year long. So all you caught were male fish.
For everyone's information, here is a list of preferred spawning temperature ranges for some popular species. Notice I said "preferred," not "absolute":
Walleye/Sauger: 45-50 degrees
White Bass: 45-50 degrees
Smallmouth Bass: 59-60 degrees
White Crappie: 60-65 degrees
Black Crappie: 62-68 degrees
Largemouth Bass: 68-72 degrees
Redear Sunfish: 68-75 degrees
Bluegill: 70-75 degrees
Blue Catfish: 70-75 degrees
Channel Catfish: 75-80 degrees
Green Sunfish: 75-86 degrees
yeah who ever said crappie have already spawned must be off their fin rocker cuz the water temp isnt even above 55 in very many lakes...
Well... ya'll can tell that to the fish i caught then. i've never known males to have yellow eggs in them: what little there were anyway.
been to hillsdale lake for the past two days and only caught 4 >>>>> I'm GOING CRAZY?
HELLO anybody going out fishing for crappie today!!!!
No not crappie, more like spoon bills at chetopa baby! Talked to my buddy down there and he said that the females are at the chetopa dam. I am leaving right now!
I thought the White Bass spawn temp was more like just above 50 to above 55 maybe KDWP could weigh in.
april 9 2:00pm caught a few bass at DG, CO lake close to the grass on spinners. April 10 lone star, DG.CO.lake and old baldwin lake nothing all day. east wind must of killed the fishing. water level going down fast on wakarusa
any info on Wakarusa?
HELLO anybody going out fishing for crappie today!!!!
No on the crappie, but we will be fishing for Easter eggs.
I fished Branner Creek Saturday morning for crappie and did not catch anything. Water temp. was 48 degrees.Need some warm nights.
Fished Kill Creek and Hillsdale Saturday for crappie. Caught nothing. Water temp at Hillsdale was 50-52 degrees. Action should pick next weekend with warmer night temps.
A popular 'fishermans tell' for when the white bass start biting in this area is when the dogwoods are blooming. It has proved to be pretty close in my observations.
Dont forget you also find Mushrooms the same time the crappie are biting. It's right around the corner. Nice and warm today and tomorrow.Time to clean the dust off my crappie gear and get ready to fight the ticks!!
im going out crappie fishing today at hillsdale lake !!WISH ME LUCK!!!!!!!!
went to the lake last night at about 7 oclock and crappie were biting stayed 9:30 brought 6 good ones
Atchison SFL: Crappie is really really slow. Went this morning for 3 hours and come up with 3 fish. Should've went turkey hunting instead, heard and saw plenty of them.
any luck at Hilldale 4-15-2009??
if lookin to catch crappie!!!! go to hillsdale lake tonight around 7oclock guarented to catch!
I went out to hillsdale a couple of days ago and caught 2 crappie along the rocks. One of them on jig the other on minnow. On a side note; the morels are popping and it seems to be a good year for them. I found 15 in my front yard.
Were they full of eggs and did you hookup any White Bass?
went to hillsdale last nite and caught 13 1/2inch crappie 1.8lbs she was a real beauty
Fished Tuttle this morning.Tuttle cove. "No crappie on the banks yet"Also fished willow lake caught one Largemouth.I hear of people finding shrooms. Like the person above found them is his yard. Must be nice!
Anybody catching any walleye at Milford?? Have they moved to the flats or still around the dam??? Going middle of next week and any info would be appreciated!!!
Chad
went to hillsdale lake tonite and me and fred caught 24 crappie it was a great night for me but as for fred he is still cleaning fish at 1;00 in the morning:)
Hillsdale- Walleye spawned earlier than a lot anticipated this year with the cold winter. Kinda strange but i caught them very consistantly since the 2nd week of March up til about April 6th before slowing down dramatically. Dam produced well. I was catching crappie in mid Feb. in about 15-20 feet of water, but nothing after that 1st cold front we had in March. Crappie should be active 2 days after this set of rain storms. I can catch the crap outta Walleyes on the dam during spawn, but wondering why so many troll the flats couple weeks after spawn for Walleyes because I've spent many a nights trying same thing as them and I never catch any and never see any of the other 7-8 boats reeling anything in.
I never catch much fishing the flats eather or do i see anyone else doing so when iam there but have not been able to get out yet.what is the water temp. at hilsdale do you know.
Hillsdale is just over 50 degrees now. I don't understand why so many people waste a good evening of fishing on the flats, especially when it gets packed here in 1-2 weeks. I always try there bc all the other boats, but haven't seen a single walleye caught there in 4 years.
The walleye can be caught very shallow after the spawn...fairly hard to troll in 2 to 3 ft of water...If your lucky you can find them going north on the flats for a few days...If the lake stays high or gets higher then its even harder to find them...last 3 or 4 years have been tough for alot of folks...Im going to try way up in shallow end of lake this year..previous years have not needed to find new spots...Roadbeds or anything with rock shallow is good...I saw a few boats trolling shallow last year and they were catching nice walleye in 4 ft or less trolling...Its best to just try BASS fishing and you will come out way ahead on walleye...Last trip out caught crappie in 20 ft of water...suspended 10 -12 ft down...around heavy brush....
ananymous from 4/20....i was at Hillsdale on 4/18 and took the water temps and it was between 60 and 63 degrees in various locations. All the rain warmed up the water, as have the higher temps as of late (but mainly the rain). Crappie are moving into the shallows, definitely not a waste of time. Not spawning quite yet but they have started moving in shallow...should start any time.
Milford is doing great on blues and the white bass are gettin ready cause i have caught 7 in the river on jigs. Good Luck
I am interested in info on snaging below the dam at Osawatomie. I have snaged on the lake of ozarks for many years, but don't have boat any more. Where to go, size weights to use, etc. thanks.
I have never experience the white bass runs and I was wondering where th best place is catch white bass at milford. I knew the river but is there an access point anywhere I can drive to?
I was wondering if anyone fishes pomona lake for crappie and walleye here it has good population of both. and what area would be a good place to find.
My dad, youngest son and I went fishing down at Hillsdale, by the Antioch boatramp, on Tuesday and caught 17 or 18 crappie, a couple of white bass and lost one large mouth. 11 of the crappie were between 10 and a half and 14 inches and the white bass were about 12 to 13 inches. Caught all of them on minnows fishing around trees. We were fishing in about 4 to 8 feet of water with the minnows about 2 and a half to 3 feet deep. It was a wonderful day to be out there and they were mighty tasty.
Brown SFL-fished for catfish yesterday, with blood, shad guts, and dip bait. No luck.
Went and look at perry last night. Must be up about 5 feet. Almost in the State Parking Lots. Should be in the Parking Lots by Tuesday night.
To answer the questions about white bass runs it depends on which lake you are near. If you are near Clinton lake try the Wakarusa river upstream of the lake. Here soon the should be running. The water is typically shallow enough to use waders, but since we just got all of that rain you will probably have to fish from the banks for a while. My cousin hasn't given me any updates as to if the run has started yet though. Later on you will want to try near the outlet. I know that Rocky Ford (south of tuttle creek outlet) gets good around mid-june and lasts through july depending on water temp. I just moved to the Junction City area so I am currently trying to find a good place on the Republican river upstream of milford. I have found a few acess spots, but most I have found are too deep for my taste. I will probably check around the clay center area though to see if conditions are better. Based on what I have seen of conditions though water temps are just about right across notheast kansas for the run. And with the recent heavy rains the tributaries should now have enough flow for the run to begin. Although some may be in/near flood stage which may make fishing very difficult. Right now would be the best time to do your scouting for spots if you haven't already.
4-29-08. took kids out to lake olathe last night form 7-9. Crappie bite was steady on minnows in the north cove. Boated 10 missed manyh many more. all but two were 8-9 inches. The two just made 10 inches. one 2 lb channel cat also.
Went to Hillsdale 4/28. Fished the dam from 7:15 pm -10:30 pm. Best fishing was from 8-9:00. Caught about 20 crappie, only 8 were 10 inches. Also caught a couple small white bass, a 2 pound cat, and a drum. Jigs or minnows under a bobber worked equally well.
Any info on the fishing at Banner Creek lately? Will be fishing this weekend for walleye, bass and crappie. Thanks
Spent the afternoon and evening at Brown County State Lake. The Crappie are starting to move up on the banks, Very spotty but caught a dozen nice 10 to 12 inch ones.
has anyone been cautching crappie at hillsdale in shollow water yet.i wonder if all the rain flooded the banks.
Fished Branner Sat. 5-2. Water temp. was 60.2 Only caught one bass and one crappie.
Went to a small lake in Wabaunsee county 2 days this past week and stopped fishing when we had 30 crappie each time, though most of the crappie in this lake are VERY small.
Does anyone know if the whites and wipers have started to come back out of the Republican River at Milford yet? Or what time of the year do they start moving back towards the dam? Thanks
Re: Milford whites and wipers (above Q). We fish Milford the week before Memorial Day every year. Well be there in a couple weeks. Last year we absolutely killed the white bass and wipers just trolling big Rapala shad raps right in the middle of the lake... they were everywhere. Unfortunately we only caught one keeper walleye. We're going to target the walleye harder this trip... any word on them
Fished Hillsdale Dam on 5/5 from bank. White bass were biting very good on jigs under bobbers from 7-9 pm. Caught a couple keeper crappie and a couple of short walleyes as well.
Anyone having any luck fishing for crappie at Clinton Lake. I've been several time lately and can't say I've seen alot of action in shallow water. Most seem to still be in deep water.
I was out at milford outlet approx 2 days ago and I was catching white bass, gold eyes, Channel cats, and more. The fishing is finally starting to pick up. Go figure it happened to coincide with when they started letting 400cfs out of the pipe. Lucky me they start letting water out after I have surgery, and can't enjoy fishing for atleast a week. What a cruel cruel game. lol
Fished perry Wednesday night. State parking lots still under water. Crappie are on their old Beds 7 to 10 feet of water. Water temp. was 65 degrees.
Fishing Last night in the evening (05/07) quite a few male crappie 1 20+" walleye and 1 13" white bass. At Milford up in a cove.
Fished Hillsdale after work on Wednesday. Good numbers of female crappie near the bottom in 20 fow on submerged brush. Not a single male caught.
Perry lake last night. Letting lot of water out, muddy in rock creek caught a few 10< not good. I still don't think spawn is on
WB County fisherman. Are you talking Alma City Lake? Was there yesterday with some success. 4 LMB that went like 16 or 17" though, back in the water they went. Crappie are small. Were you using minnows? That lake is up I'd guess 10 ft from what it was my first visit this year. I guess the dam must leak or something.
how is the crappie fishing at hillsdale are they coming in to spawn yet.
fished geary sfl for a little bit on 5-9-09 no bites shorline access was limited due to alot of people but least it was nice water stained
Atchison SFL ... has anyone been fishing for channel yet? Did you have any luck?
Anyone got any info on the walleye at Milford?
fished geary sfl on 5-13 and 5-14 with a buddy we caught 8 small bass 1 crappie 1 saugeye and a bluegill water was murky with about a 8 inch visiblity
Milford 5/22 & 5/23. We started mid day Thursday trolling crank baits basically looking for whatever we could find. We didn’t have any luck with the walleye so we moved to deeper water and started following birds. In the 35 to 40 foot region we started catching white bass with the occasional whiper. 4 fisherman and we caught in the neighborhood of 60 fish. Some nice size white bass and a few whiper up to about 4#... fun fishing. 5/23 we headed out into big winds and white caps. We drifted some flats and found a spot holding some walleye. Ended up with 6 but only one was over 18”. The wind settled down and so did the fishing. Switched over to trolling for whites again… caught some but not like the day before. The hot white/whiper crank bait was a cheapo mid depth diver in chrome. If your crank didn’t have some flash it wasn’t getting noticed. The walleye were caught with Lindy type drift rigs with a spinner and worm.
Fished Perry Monday night 5-18. Must of caught over 60 crappie and only had 5 keepers.
Has anybody had any luck at Shawnee Mission Park Lake with crappie or wipers? I was there this morning and noticed fish busting on top chasing shad, might have been wipers. I'm fishing from the bank. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!
im new to kansas and im looking for a good place for flatheads can anyone help me out
Does anyone know if the crappie have spawned at hillsdale yet or is it just the weather that is holding things up.
Kansas has lots to offer with flathead fishing. There are opportunities fishing the Kaw River with a pole or set lines. The Federal Reservoirs also hold nice fish and can be taken at the outlets or in the lake. It can be time consuming waiting for the big one, but fish over 30 lbs are not unusual. Live baits are the best bet and we are just starting the best time of the year.
Anyone know if the Kansas Walleye Association had their tournament at Milford this past weekend?
Yes, the Kansas Walleye Association had their tournament at Milford on 5/17. I wasn't in the tourney, but was out on the lake. I heard something to the effect that Cheney had too much water come into the lake recently and fishing conditions weren't good to have it there. Don't know if that is true, but that was the murmur.
That is what I heard. Anyone know where i can find results? KWA's website is never updated ontime.
Checked out a Topeka vicinity (30 miles out of town) lake. Wind was less than 10mph with it hot and sunny. I was on the lake at 6am and fished till 11:30.
Marked NO fish on the typical structure that usually holds walleyes and wipers at the lake. Caught one wally pitching a jig up against the riprap on the dam, he hit the bait right about at the boat.
I didn't check out the shallow areas all that much. Trolled a bit with a spinner rig/minnow and a shad rap. Didn't find any fish. I'm thinking fish are shallow, <3-5 fow.
fished milford 22-25 wipers on the south island on shad ,real slow on worms saw one boat catching one after another on shad . walleye ind bays slow a few shorts caught.
Fished at Hillsdale state park access, didn't catch a lot on the jigs but my uncle caught about 10 or so keepers walking in the water along the shore line on minnows. They say they been catching them late at night. White bass was hitting too. Caught a couple of no keeper walleyes.
Spent last weekend at Tuttle Creek, Northeast of Manhattan. Surprisingly there was not much boat traffic. Found most fish were on the breaks going into coves on the North side of the lake. largemouth seem to be liking lipless crank baits and pearl/charteuse spinner. I also happened to catch a 2 foot gar on a beetle spinner.
Fished Tuttle Creek Outlet Thursday Night with no luck used goldfish, perch and worm. Fished from Sundown till 3:00 a.m. did see one guy who had 2 ~3-5lb flatheads.
Fished Milford middle last week no luck at all on walleye, anybody catching any now?????
Fished for hours on Clinton Lake yesterday and only caught a few perch. Pretty disappointing. Had better luck on Gardner Lake with crappie and bass.
fished at geary state fishing lake south of junction city friday night and saturday morning. 6-5 and 6-6. had excellent luck for catfish 3 of us caught 14. 1 away from 3 full limits except we ran out of bait. using nightcrawlers fishing next to the dam. the smallest one being 3 lbs and the largest being 10lbs we lost one somewhere close to 15-20 lbs. good luck fishing.
Fished at Leavenworth State Fishing Lake for bass Sunday night from 7:00 pm to dark off of my boat. Not a single fish. Only had one hit on a Senko. Tried jigs, spinnerbaits, rapala minow and senkos. From talking to other fishermen, all species were very slow yesterday.
Fished Hillsdale Sunday 6/14. I tell you what... if you want to fish that lake do it on the weekday because that thing is covered in rec boats during the weekend. I remember when Hillsdale was a nice fishing lake... now it's like a washing machine. Fishing was SLOOOOW!
fished milford outlet night of 19 Jun 09. Caught a lot of gar but no cats.
Anybody catching any walleye or big wipers at Milford??? WE are leaving Friday morning for a weekend fishing trip, thanks
Can anyone tell me if the Bass fishing at Lake Shawnee is very good? I have considered going there, but have never heard of many reports. Any size or numbers available there? The forecast shows that it is good this year.
Caught a 15 pound 30 inch channel cat at boat ramp 3 feeder thursday morning on sonnys stink bait. Biggest I've gotten this year, it's been real slow.
boat ramp three at what lake?
Oops, sorry forgot to add what lake..... Clinton in the state park.
Anyone been to Milford lately? Taking a family trip and looking for info on walleye and wipers.
Bass fishing at tuttle is sllllooowwww.... normally catch one or two in an hour. The off season trout area is slow as well.
Anybody out there? I'm also interested about the status of fishing at Milford. Anyone been fishing at Milford? What's happening on the wiper, smallies and what's the condition on the shad?
It is a little slow for both from what I have heard. I normally fish the outlet, but I hve heard from a few guys that fish the main lake. I also got this from one of the kdwp official on the dock squak page:
"Milford's algal bloom has been caused by elevated sediment and phosphorus levels. While not toxic and not an immediate threat to health, the good water quality of Milford is threatened by increased loads of phosphorus. Phosphorus and sediments are coming in with recent rainfall run off from upstream lawns, fields, pastures and eroding stream banks. The Ks. Dept. of Health & Environment is aware of the situation and encourages everyone to promote and use practices to improve Kansas water quality."
So take that for what you will.
Fished south end of Milford lake- dam, west Rolling Hills, Curtis Creek, North Overlook Park from Weds to Sunday. Had some luck using bottom bouncers with worms and minnows. Fished points and edges about 25 foot deep. Caught 1 25 inch wiper, small wipers, smallmouth bass, black crappie and lots of catfish. Sunup to sun down. 24 to 36 inch walleye rigs with yellow spinners worked the best.
Going to Hillsdale in the morning- anyone know what is biting and on what? Thanks.
Fished Perry Sunday afternoon. 8-16
Fished for whites on the Apple Valley flats. Caught around 60 fish keep 10 that were close to 2-lbs each. Only fished for 3 hours.
Hello everyone. We just got a boat and started fishing and we enjoy reading everybodys posts. We are having a hard time finding where the spots are that everyone is talking about. All of the nick names for the coves flats holes show up no where on any of the maps we have found. We tried finding the hog trough at perry with no luck people have heard about it but the people we talk to do not know where to fid it. We will be fishing at perry clinton hillsdale and milford any help on names of the spots would be great p.s. don't worry about us taking all the fish I spend more time untangleing her line than fishing lol lol
hey everyone. I have a bass tournament on milford lake oct 18-19. With the water cooling off fast from the recent fronts does anyone have any advice where to find these fall bass?
The trout are NOT biting at Willow Lake.
Fished the Stockdale area at Tuttle Creek today. Left from the mid-cove boat ramp and fished on the south bank in water 5-25 feet deep with small jigs tipped with crappie nibbles. No bites, but the ice is clear and 8-10 inches all the way across the cove. Did also see a couple of groups fishing on Willow Pond catching a few of the trout.
Hello all. Anyone fishing at Perry lately?
hello has anyone been fishing at hilsdales heated dock atthe marina and if so is the crappie biting also how much do they chareg to fish there.
My son and I went to Tuttle Creek yesterday and fished one of the rocky points near the State Park Marina. The wind had pushed the baitfish that direction all day so it was a fish producing point. We caught between 20-25 Whites all between 1-4 pounds, 3 Wiper around 1-2 pounds, and 5-6 Walleye between 1-2 pounds. We casted towards the bank with various crankbaits that dove 2-6 feet deep. The best colors were bright green, yellow, and orange.
